Black Hawk Planter

I have found an old 2 row Black Hawk planter, in fairly decent shape near home. The guy is asking $100 for it, but before I commit, I'm wondering how easy plates are to get? It has a set of corn plates in it, which is good, but I'll need some bean plates.

Can anybody give me some help?

Thanks, Mac

The only way to get plates is if you find anouther planter with them or like finding chicken tooth at a swap meet. And there is no other plate that can be made to fit. A few still used by the Amish but they usually have had them for years and back when parts were avaible got the different size corn plates they ever thought would be needed. In the last few years working with the Amish I found that out about not being able to get plates. The Dealer I work with a few years ago when I was getting ready for to buy items at the local consignment sale we were talking and I said there were to be two of them but you do not want them, he said yes I do so I got them and then later when trying to sell them could not supply plates so could not sell the planters. And the first 2 row horse drawn planter yo through the last built tractor 4 row planter they all took the same plate. And NO there never was a plastic plate made to fit as some well you to look there. I know as when he could not sell those planters I was in the trouble spot as well as he was. And so far this year I have bought 5 hay rakes, a manure spreader, 2 grain drills, 2 sulky plows and numerous wagons for that dealer as I am in a different area than he is to find machinery that he cannot find. I have no idea if the planter you are looking at is the old horse drawn 2 row, the tractor version of that planter, one of 2 different 3 point hitch planters, one that ran off the PTO of the little Fords up to the newer tractor drawn 2 or 4 row planters. The company has been out of bussiness since the 50's and the last of the planters were sold under the Cockshutt name. Probably in the 60's but possibly some in the 70's.

Well guys, its a 3 point planter, ground driven type. But apparently that won't make any difference since plates are non-existent. It'd probably be a good one to fix up, but as far as for me using it, I don't think it'd be worth it.

Thanks all the same,

Mac

Well heck, on further reflection, I have decided to buy the darn thing. For 2 reasons. 1, itd sure look nice behind my 51 B in parades, all fixed up. And 2, I found a couple bean plates and a parts planter in the neighbors bone yard. So I guess we'll see if I can get it bought Saturday.
