rectangular oil covers

I have two old pieces of machinery. One an old grinder and another old piece, a lathe. to lubricate the shafts of the grinder and the lathe, there is a rectabglar iron cover hinged to the main casting. They measure about 3/4 inch by 1 inch and under the cover is what appears to be a piece of felt. Add a half teasoon of oil to the felt and it keeps the machine spinning just fine. This would appear to be before oil cups. Anybody have an idea of about how old such methods of oiling machines are and when they phased out.

I used to be a dealer for a commercial dish washing machine manufacturer. The machines that I bought in the eighties used the felt oil pads. They were eliminated in the nineties.

My 100+ year old drill press has those. A few drops every other time you use it is enough.
Old cotton gin here had those on the big heavy overhead shafts run by a steam engine. Oiled regularly, they will last for many years.
