PTO Shield Repair or Replacement

I have an older NH chopper that has a square or rectangular solid bar between the yokes and has metal shield tubes. I have crimped the outer metal shield tube and it no longer slides over the inner metal tube. I was able to pull the pto shaft apart and am looking for suggestions on how to fix the outer tube so the shaft will telescope again.
Also, is it possible to replace the metal shield tubes with plastic? The metal tubes are currently connected to the back of the yokes with snap rings. I do not know if a plastic locking collar will work in place of the snap ring. I "googled" the subject and could not find any information on this. Thanks.

I have heard of folks making guards out of plastic pipe, we bought an old Bush Hog auger last summer and it has no guard, I'm going to see what I can come up with.

Take the outer tube off, slide a longer pipe inside, close to the ID of the tube...support the pipe with a vise, blocks, etc....can often hammer the kinks out that way. A bit of heat may be needed as well. New steel tubes are also available. PVC or drain tile can be used to cover the spinning shaft, but the yokes need to be covered as well.
