Hydraulic Lift Cylinder Question

The hydraulic lift cylinder on my Hession 1110 mower conditioner has only one hose running to it. Originally it had two, supply and return. The return hose is missing and the previous owner simply put a cloth cover over the return fitting at the cylinder. The cylinder as it is lifts and drops the cutter head OK and really no weeping of oil out the return line.

Question is - is this set-up OK or do I need a return line?

Thanks,
Bill

It is okay to use it with only one line. However, there is a fitting (breather) you can put where the other line installed. It will keep debris out of the cylinder and allow it to "breathe".

If it's a double acting cylinder I would put a hose on it and plumb it to the tractor.I'm assuming you have hydraulic remotes on the tractor.Think about this, whenever your dropping the mower your pulling a vacuum inside the cylinder when the piston is retracting thereby potentially causing dirt and moisture to be pulled into the cylinder. That's probably why someone covered the opening on the cylinder.

Most Hay bines are made for power up gravity down so yes that is just fine. My NH460 has a 2 way cylinder with the one fitting has a vent plug in it

Your question is it OK to use like this, it depends on IF your tractor has a single acting system set up for one hose or a 2 way system set up for to hoses for to operate the cylinder in both directions. Single acting will not pull cylinder together only weight on cylinder to do that. If it is set for the 2 way when you drop you are pulling a vacum in the tractor. So depends on your tractor if OK or not. But if OK then get that breather to put in the cylinder.
