JD 7000 seed tube sensor question

I have a 4 row wide JD 7000 planter with no-till attachments for seed and fertilizer. I have the regular row monitor console with lights only mounted on the tractor. I have had the monitor serviced/repaired by Ag-Tronics (sp?) What I am seeing is 3 of the lights in the seed tubes light brightly wherein one of them is on but not as bright as the other 3. I have cleaned the electrical terminals that connect to the seed tubes and the connector that goes to the monitor harness. Do I have to replace the sensor in the tube? I intend to replace the electrical connectors on this individual seed tube. I could take it to my JD dealer and have them test this sensor. Any assistance is always appreciated.

Could be someone put a lower wattage bulb in that one, I keep learning the hard way to check the simple stuff first.

Hi jdv, thanks for your response. The bulbs in the monitor mounted on the tractor are the same. The sensors in the seed tubes are all the same also.

The way I read it the lights in one seed tube are a bit dimmer than the others.

Couple thoughts. Most of these have two lights per tube, I think it is to get full coverage. One may be broken or burned out. Nother thought is the row in question may be going bad. Nother thought which is quite common it may be dirty, graphite dust, cobwebs etc.

All that being said here are my experiences. Two things you need to have in the field with you, Bottle brush and electric contact cleaner. The cleaner will also work for cleaning the eyes/lights in the tubes.

Your moniter is probably the most trouble free set up out there. Doesn't give you all the info the newer ones do but they are not as accurate as you might think. Main thing you need is are you planting and what you have will do that very well.

If you are updating the connectors for the individual sensors I would suggest going to what is called "weatherpak" These are sealed and are virtually trouble free.

Another good idea is to have a replacement sensor at the ready unless you are close to a stocking dealer and your planting hours match their operating hours. This is another item I try to always have on hand but when I am doing beans my planter is using 23 of these little devils.

Like big jt says- carry a brush in the planter toolbox. Yes, planters need a toolbox. I use an old toothbrush, inserted/bolted into a copper tube. I"ve had 3 7000s since 1976, and each had double red lights on the sensors. Might have replaced 3-4 in all those years. Just normal pre-plant service to brush each one before the season.
