Hay Wagon Bolster Stakes

I am rebuilding an old hay wagon. I believe that it may be a Danco or an Electric Wheel. 2 of the bolster stakes are pretty bent and rotted. Does anyone know of a place to buy new ones or would I have to find someone to make them?

Without a photo of a "good stake" from your wagon, it's only a guess. But I had bolster stakes for an old running gear fabricated from 1/8" plate steel by our local welding shop. They bent a piece of 1/8" plate steel - probably 9" square - 3 ways into a "U" shape and then I used my angle grinder to cut away a piece in the middle section so it would fit over the axle and then drilled holes in the bottom of both sides of the stake to bolt them to the 3" wide axle. The welding shop did the bending and I did the cutting and drilling. I believe this project was for a John Deere 952 gear.
You can buy bolster stakes for John Deere 952,953,and 963 running gears for $19.75 each.

I buy them from an Amish neighbor that sells wagon parts for $8 a piece. So someone is making them. They all seem to be universal fit.

If you are talking about the brackets that bolt to wagon frame front or back, and endgate slips into them, they are available at most any TSC, hardware section.

Poke on the underlined title below and it should take you right to the John Deere bolster stakes for $19.75 each. The previous page says they are sold out but they will replenish their supply. Just email them and ask when. I have bought bolster stakes from them in the past. I don't remember how much the welding company charged me to bend the 1/8" steel but it was reasonable or else I wouldn't have done it. You can ask your local welding company or your local steel fabricator for a price. Here's what I did recently that you can do and save some money. I have a John Deere 963 running gear that is currently excess to my needs but I use the rear axle to bend steel. The axle is 3" wide and has crisp edges. I use hefty "C" clamps and clamp steel - like 1/8" thickness - onto the top edges of the axle for a crisp bend and use a 3# hammer and pound and bend the steel. No heat needed. You can do the same to form your bolster stakes using the axle of your running gear which will turn out to be a perfect fit. Lay the steel over the axle, clamp it, pound it to make an upside down "U", cut out a 1" or 1-1/2" piece from the middle section of your "U" to fit over the axle and set the thing with the "U" pointing outward on your axle. Perfect fit. Just drill some holes for bolts - 3/8"x 4-1/2" with washers on both ends - to attach it to the axle. Hope this is helpful.
