John Deere No. 5 Mower - Mounting to a Farmall

Can someone post pictures on how they mount a John Deere No 5. Semi-Mounted sickle bar mower to a Farmall H or M tractor? Also, if it requires special mounting brackets on the mower, where I might be able to find these? Thanks!

Depends on the model of mower and what hitch it came with, some would just bolt to the Farmall drawbar, others that had the quick tatch hitch would require quite a bit. Best is to find a parts book as they show all hitches made for all the tractors. You can find that book for free on line.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the round braces that attach the tractor and the drawbar on the mower.

Note the drawbar on mower (Key 1).

Take a look at the photo below of the drawbar on mower.

Hope this helps.

When I used a JD #5 behind my Farmall M, I just took the roller off the drawbar and pulled it out of the way, bolted the mower drawbar directly to the drawbar frame. Simple and worked fine.

That is good and the way I said it could be done but then you have to have the correct hitch or universal hitch model mower and not the model with the quick hitch that is designed more for the JD tractors and mounts to a 2" diameter bracket on each side of the tractor. At one time I was collecting machinery and had one with each type of hitch. So for him if he would be able to put on a picture of his mower from the front then we could actually know what he has and give him some good and usefull information. As is we cannot do that as we don't know the version of his mower.

It is going to depend on how the boat anchor...sorry, mower...is configured and whether you want to change it. The manual shows how to put it on almost any tractor. I have a couple manuals to sell if you want one. I sold the boat anchors...sorry, mowers...years ago. If you have one with the quick attach arms on it and want to use those, I made a bracket for my drawbar that they attached to. It was basically a piece of flat plate with holes matching the drawbar. A length of round steel was welded to the edge of the plate and the arms on the mower bolted around that. It is still around somewhere, also for sale if I can find it! I started haying years ago with #5 mowers. They are good machines and I love the sound they make...BUT...there are better mowers out there for close to the price. Since you have an IH tractor, I would look for a 120 mower. You will never regret it. I have one of those too...but NOT for sale. :)

Key # 6 is on the mower. Key # 1 bolts to the tractor drawbar. Note that bolt (Key # 9) is the point where the mower pivots when the cutter bar hits an obstruction and the spring loaded clamp (not shown here) at the right hand end of Key # 6 snaps open on impact.

The #5 we had on an M was had a "home made" mounting bracket that bolted to the drawbar. I think it was made from a piece of round shaft to match the clamps welded to some angle or channel iron. The shaft set back from the drawbar about 3 inches. Enough room to allow the clamps to pivot up and down. I don't have any pictures and I'm going from 30-odd year old memory. Good luck with it.
