Finish Mower PTO Shaft Cover: Replace, Use or Remove?

Did some mowing with the finish mower for the first time this season. Looked back, and saw that the PTO shaft cover had gotten twisted up on itself.

I cut off the twisted parts, and now the two halves lack about 2" of overlapping.

Should I use it as is, replace it, or remove it altogether? I usually leave guards, etc. in place, and I never get off the seat with the PTO engaged.

Probably shouldn't follow my lead.. Only implement I own that still has the cover is my tiller but it's only a year old. Would just about bet before the season is over it won't have one either. I do the same as you... have a few unwritten rules I follow. Never start the tractor without being in the seat, never get off the tractor with the PTO engaged.

Agree.

My two rules are very similar and simple:

1. Never engage the PTO unless sitting in the seat.

2. Always disengage the PTO before leaving the seat.

Thanks, guys. I used a lot of implements without PTO shaft covers on small Fords and Fergusons when I was a kid, but we always followed the rules. I guess I can do the same now.

I am cautious about PTO shields. Had a good friend hurt bad with a PTO shaft. New shields would cost maybe $50. What is your health worth??? Also will weeds and such get wrapped up in the shaft without the shield???

You could also bridge the gap with another pieces of PVC tubing. I have also found the thin green PVC drain tile with fit some PTO shields well.

Don't forget that the pledge that you signed when you joined YT contained an article agreeing to never advise running PTO equipment without all shields in place. Even if you don't recall that, We do know that no one ever set out in the morning intending to get tangled in one, yet we know that tens of thousands of people have been killed or maimed by unshielded PTO shafts.
