Picked up a John Deere 44 Plow

Found this on CL and made the deal today. Its a John Deere 44 Plow with hydraulic lift. It came without the lift cylinder, but we just happen to have one. The shares and mold boards look to be in good shape. Only thing missing is the tail wheel. Shouldn't take to much work to get it working.

The tail wheel is missing but somebody added a long landside on the rear bottom witch is a workable solution to no tail wheel. I bet it will work pretty good like it is. What are you going to pull it with?

The PO did say his grandfather bought it new and he doesn't ever remember a tail wheel on it. We will be using our Farmall M for now, but I hope to have my john deere A ready soon.

(quoted from post at 05:25:24 04/07/17) Still find some pretty good plows around here but unusual to find one with decent tires.

Yep, these automotive tire's have to go.

(quoted from post at 06:48:47 04/07/17) We've got one in nice shape, but it has the slow speed bottoms, and the points have a tendency to break in our boney soil, so we don't use it anymore. It did a nice job of plowing though.

We have a lot of clay in our soil and heavy sod. We do have some rocks that need to be dug out so we don't damage the plows. Most of the pastures haven't been plowed in 60-70 years and we found these old plows do a real good job. The last 2 years we have been using my other 44 trip plow and thought this would be a nice addition. Here is my other plow.

I have one of these but mine is a rope trip. My uncle bought it new and when he gave it to me it had all the paint on it yet. It has been here for 30 years so most of the paint is gone now. It is complete but his soil was clay and the mold boards are wore bad. I broke one moving it a while back. I was wondering if they are worth anything or just scrap or should I part it out

I would try selling as is or parting it out. If I was closer I would take it off your hands.

You can still buy moldboards for that plow thru a John Deere dealer. Yes, they are very pricey, but you will rarely find another plow in that good of shape and they are not making them any more.
For gosh sakes, do not part it out! Those plows are part of our rural history.
