New Idea Spreader age?

We brought home this New Idea spreader last week, and I have been completely stumped trying to find any serial number records on the web. Is it possible that a company with so much history has no archive available? Can anyone decipher the tag codes for me? It does say "AVCO," and it says No 17, Lot 379, SN B115182. Thanks in advance.

I have a parts manual here for it but have no idea if it gives any of that information as I have never looked at it. I was interested in the older 4 wheel spreaders that were in the same book group. I think when it went to Avco they stopped including any of that.

Anything that exists anymore the museum at Coldwater, Ohio where things were built has it. Contact them. New Idea actually shut down with the prommis to reopen at 99 years of age just so they could say they reached 100 years for their celibration in 1999. I had a piece in their display that I still have and the poster they made for it. Had a second piece displayed but no longer have it as I sold it and is back working in the fields as far as I know. So that museum is your best place to look.

I hope yours in not as big as the one I have, New Idea brand, it was probably made in the 50's
it was frozen up due to some one borrowing it and not cleaning it properly,

I ask my neighbor if I could borrow it and got it unfrozen after way too much work.

then my neighbor gave it to me, said "If I ever need it, I will come get it, years later he passed on, so I guess I got it for a while.

however, its 12 ft wide, and so unhandy to take down the road.
but it works, I keep it oiled from time to time, its ready to go if I ever need it again.

a small 3 pt spreader is so much more handy to use.

Dad bought 1 new before 1958. It was sold for a lime spreader. He used it 1 time and it sat in the fence row till someone stole if about 5 years ago. Not 1 of New Ideas better ideas.

hd,
I think the old man I got the 12 ft spreader from said he used it mainly to sow wheat, filled it with wheat seed and pulled a section harrow behind it. since it is fairly heavily made it has a hitch on the rear to pull a harrow, maybe all of them did, I think a roller would be too heavy to pull behind the spreader,

it being 12 ft wide there is a lot of stress on the frame if you filled it with fertilizer.

I tried lime once and it worked, but you could not put too much in at one time, just too hard on it in disc soil. also the lime would have to be powder dry to feed, was a pain in the butt, never did it again. but I got it spread,

you will be much happier with a narrower machine,
just my opinion,

New Idea didn't go by serial numbers on age or parts needs.Everything was by the LOT numbers. You know the LOT number and they or an OLD dealer can tell you when it was made.

Thanks for the input, everybody. I guess I should have specified that it is a manure spreader?. I've been trying to
get pictures uploaded but it doesn't seem to work. I'll keep trying.
