I am installing a slip clutch on a 7 ft. JD rotary mower a would like to know if a clutch with 8000 lb torque is adequate. I don't want to undersize the clutch and have it slip needlessly.

Hip shot: Going to guess that the shaft size will determine the limits of the clutches ability to handle a load. Spring tension is what sets the slip pressure. Manuals that I have used spec the spring pressure 2 ways: tighten till it quits slipping under normal loads, or set the spring length to X dimension via the bolt nuts tension. Having the metal plate surfaces shiny and the friction discs clean of any accumulated powder (if used) helps in getting an accurate setting.
