Belt driven log splitter

Hello I have a older log splitter that is belt driven, I have a 22 hp kholer engine on it. When I turn it on the pump squeals. When I run the ram it stops squealing but the ram will not split anything. Under pressure the ram stops and the pump pully slows and stops for a second and then starts spinning but still wont split the wood. I'm going to replace the pump but is there any specific pump I need?

old pump : on the old pump it has this on a silver plate nothing else:

Why don't you tighten the belt so it doesn't slip and try it before you replace the pump.??? What is the system pressure when the cyl. is fully extended and deadheaded?? Diagnose the system, and not just throw new parts on it. It could be low relief valve pressure that you can adjust, or bad seals in the cylinder.
Look before you leap!!!

possibly clean the pulleys and maybe replace the belt.

however, the way a small wood splitter works, the hydraulic pump will pump oil at low pressure high volume until the ram hits the wood, as the pressure builds up the pump is suppose to shift to low volume high pressure mode.

this process is what allows a small hydraulic pump to build up enough pressure to bust wood.

this shift mechanism in your hydraulic pump may be defective and not shifting, therefore the pump stays in high volume all the time and that slips the belt.

my old splitter has a direct connection from the gas motor to the hydraulic pump, never had a problem with that system. has split much wood over the years.

I also have a belt driven log splitter, to keep the belts from slipping I installed a flat belt tightner pulley on top of the belts with a spring to keep tension on the belts. If you do not have double belts install them one belt is not enough to properly drive the pump.

If the belt is not squealing, it sounds like the hydraulic system is cavitating. Raise the hydraulic tank above the level of the pump or check for a restriction of fluid somewhere.
