Ferguson 6 ft Disc

I have an old Ferguson 6' disc harrow like the one below that needs new discs all around. I used to use it with a smaller tractor and it worked pretty well. Is there any way to extend it to 8' wide to use on a larger tractor, by putting on longer axles and extra discs ... or is that just a dumb idea? I want to mostly use it for landscaping work and not disc-ing plowed ground. - thanks.

Dumb idea, yes. First off to put longer axles in that you could get but would be expencive you would need more spools plus the blades. But what bakes it a bad idea is where the bearings are placed on the axle, first off you have 3 blades on the outside of the bearing and that is overloading that outside bearing and making it more likely to if you would hit something with that outside blade bend things up, now if you pot a spool and blade out further then chance of hitting that blade on something and bending, possibly breaking something quadruples over what you have now. Field work would be a lot better on it than landscaping work as less chanced of catching the end of the axle on something and breaking every thing up and that is too good a model disk to tear up. If you need a wider disk cheaper to buy what you need but make sure the frame to support things is as far out as the last disk and also as far forward and backward of the disk axle as the blades are to keep from hitting the end of the axle and bending things up and working landscaping you are liable to hit something, tree or building.

Thanks for the advice Leroy! I checked and it is actually a 7 foot model ABO 22. So I'll just replace the discs, bearings, axles, etc. and keep using it without messing with it. Sure have got my moneys worth out it over the years, only paid $60 at an auction for it.

Why would you want to replace the bearings and axles? They should not have to be replaced Even if blades were a little loose and with that wore into the axles you still do not need to replace, only if it had gotten damaged in some way and a bent axle can be straightened without problems. I have done that when I cought a blade on a telephone pole. And without digging out my books I would say those are white iron bearings that you are never supposed to replace, that disk was made before the sealed bearings so it does not have that kind so unless it is a very early model that had the wood bearing inserts there is nothing to replace and if it by chance would still have the wood type you would just have to find a woodworking shop and have them made. If the bearings are what I think that disk should have there should be at least an eight of an inch play in them and if they are wore enough for three eight inch play still no reason to replace, just take a bit more grease when you grease it, instead of one tube possibly two tubes but still way cheaper than replacing if you can even find any at around a hundred dollars a part. And for what you say you want to do even a 15" blade will do you good as they probably cane with only a 16" blade when new but could have had an 18" blade as an option. And if you do need blades try Agri-Supply. They have the type blades for that disk that Shoups metioned a lot do not have. And way better prices on the sizes both have and even if they would not quite wear as long you would still never wear them out. If blades are bad enough that you need to change you should need to replace NOTHING except the blade.

And that disk as I count the blades there are 7 blades per gang so that makes it an 8' disk not a 7' as you measure the cut of the back gangs and the blades do not look bad in the picture. If it is as looks in the picture you got a steel on it as it is a couple hundred dollar disk at auction around here.

Thanks again Leroy. I was thinking that the bearings would need replaced after 60 years but if they aren't sealed, then I understand -- I'll check the tolerances. The picture is not of mine (must be an 8' like you say), the one I have is a really 7 foot with (6) 16" discs per side. Agri-supply sure looks like the place to get the discs.
