Can a NH 847 make a silage bale?

Yes bit you will quickly find out how good chain is and
don't go to wet. Neighbor made baleage for years with one
but I don't know at what moisture.

Chain balers make ok silage bales, Krone
still uses chains in their balers, but
silage/haulage can be hard on balers. The
shear weight of the bale and the power
needed to keep it turning can be hard on
drive lines and bearings and the chains
themselves.
Don't bale too wet, about 40% moisture
works for me... Using a slightly smaller
horsepower tractor would probably help some
as the tractor will let you know when the
work gets hard...

I've heard 30%. Can you describe how that process works, Do you have to wrap the bale with anything for fermentation, can it be done with regular twine tie?

Twine time works, and 30 moisture would be
ok too I think. The bale needs to be
wrapped to exclude air (oxygen) which would
make it rot. The process is a bit like
making pickles. Years ago we used to make
bale silage using a giant bag which we
slipped over the bale and tied tight,
worked ok but not the best, now most people
use either a tube type wrapper which makes
a long line of wrapped bales or an
individual wrapper which does one bale at a
time. Individual wrapper uses a lot more
wrap.
