NEW HOLLAND 848 BALER QUESTIONS

Ive posted here before in the last week or so as my baler search continues. I sold my old NH 851 this winter with intentions of replacing it with another baler that made a 4' wide bale and that was capable of making silage, with about a $5000 budget. I know that's not much to work with but being a young guy starting out and the market being what it has the last few years that's what I've got to work with. I've seen a few posts from the past of guys saying they've baled silage with their 848's and gotten along well. I only bale about 50-100 wet bales a year. I loved my 851 and these seem to be a big step up. would I get along fine with one? how hard is it to set it to make a 4' bale for wet hay and then make my dry hay in 4'x5' bales? from what videos ive seen they seem to make a nice tight bale but I haven't found any of anyone baling silage. anyone have any words of wisdom?

Early 848 had a light duty chain late ones had heavy or vice versus. Count the number of round bars the one with the higher number makes haylage without destroying the chain friend of mine has both think the one he uses for haylage has w wide pickup also he says it is the superior baler by far

I have a late NH 848 without floor chains (has roller). It's smaller that an 851 - I get the impression that you're thinking the 848 and 851 balers are about the same size. The manual for my 848 says it makes an 800 pound bale. I weighed a load last fall, fresh out of the field, and they averaged 600 pounds apiece. I like my 848, but never baled anything but dry hay with it. I'm kinda surprised to hear that it would bale silage. It needs a minimum 40 hp tractor.

848 is roughly 4x5 851 is 5x5 I think none of the 848 were sold to bale silage but they will do it with patientance. The light duty chain won't stand it very long though the heavier duty one will May have my early and late backwards in my previous post but the one with the heavier chain is the one you want for haylage

I had a 644 silage special until this fall, when it caught on fire. But it was a good baler. You had to really slow down in
wetter material, but it made a good bale most of the time. I only made silage bales for 2 years. They were just too much of a
PITA to work with, and silage and hay seemed to feed the critters well. I just bought a JD 459....

A 848 makes a 4x4.5 foot bale. Without Bale Command, the bale diameter is adjusted by setting the buzzer to stop to manually tie the bale. The baler probably has had the chain replaced before now and for 100 or so bales it would work fine. I had one with the wide pick-up and made 4to5 hundred a year. Also with silage, the hay at 30% moisture is sufficient. Ensiles fine, is not so heavy and much easier on the baler......Ron

ok I know the 848 is a smaller and newer baler, the whole reason I sold my 851 was because it was too big. Ideally im hoping to end up with a 644, but money is very tight this year so it may be hard to get in the ball park on one money wise. I'm hoping to go look at some balers this week and the one dealer I want to go see also has some nice 848's on the lot that's why I'm asking about them. That said, does anyone know what number chain or what the serial number break is for the heavy chain on the 848 so I know what to look for? I liked my chain baler ALOT for its simplicity and capacity and frankly would almost prefer another one over a belt baler if I can find a good one that will do what I want.

Where are you located? I just looked at a NH 853 that makes the same width bale as the 848 but can bale a bale larger diameter, baler is a 1 owner, always shedded with a new chain and both new cylinders within the last 2 years and the asking price is $1500 can probably be bought for $1200.It also can tie with twin or net wrap and the guy has 2 new rolls of net wrap to go with the baler.I was thinking of buying but since I have 4 working 851 balers and 3 parts balers I'm going to stick with the 851.The baler is Central Virginia.

I'm in western Pennsylvania but I'd be willing to make a road trip for the right deal. That sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. If you have contact info for the guy I'd be interested in talking to him.

A 853 bale is 5feet wide, not 4feet, same as your 851. The 853 uses the same 550 size chain as the 848 as well just longer. The 855 used a#80 chain. So a 848 makes a 4x4.5 ft bale. a 853 makes a 5x5 ft bale. same size chain, same type of air bag system.....Ron

Send me a email and I'll email you his phone number back. He's about 125 miles South of DC and about 70 miles West of Richmond on US 15 as a general idea where he's located.

Went up and measured my balers the 851 has a chain that is 65 1/2" wide outside to outside of the chain. The 853 and the 847 have chains that are both 55" outside to outside of the chain. So the 847 and the 853 will make the same width bale. And my neighbor has a 848 and it makes the same width bale as my 847.

NH 853 chain tube part #9617621 NH 848 chain tube part #770634 41.5inches So if the 847 and the 853 chain both measure 55 inches and the 847 is the same size as the 848, why does the 848 part #770634 say 41.5inches? I had a 853 and a 848 at the same time and they don't make the same width bale. Just sayen....Ron
