IH 55 chisel plow lift question

I recently purchased a IH 55 10 shank chisel plow with 3 inch twisted shanks. Purchased an Owner's Manual and it stated to use a 3 1/2 x 8 inch hydraulic cylinder. I have a number 3 x 8 cylinders and was wondering if one of them would work. Do I have to get a larger one? I ask because my 15 foot JD 1100 field cultivator with spike harrow uses a 3 x 8 and works fine. Any assistance is always appreciated.

Should be fine.

If the tractor is old or the hyd pump is weak it may not lift it with the smaller cylinder. But I wouldn't think so. If the tractor doesn't lift it, you didn't hurt anything, just need to get the bigger cyclinder then....

A smaller cylinder might have a weaker shaft where the rod connects to the clevis, and could break more easily. But I sure wouldn't worry about that in this case. I don't see it being an issue.

I'd pin it in and go, not worry about it.
