Can anyone tell me the model of this drill? I think it is a Model M. The disk holders had an IH symbol and a part number on them as in the. picture.
Also can anyone give me a little help on setting the seeder for alfalfa and oats? I have included pictures of the devices for setting the seed rate.

I know absolutely nothing about Grain Drills, I'm a Miner not a Farmer, but I Googled "IH Grain Drill, Model M, Seed Chart" and this is the first item to come up - http://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/trforum/viewtopic.php?p=4225951&sid=408749f231383c313d6666317609b0c2 - a post on Yesterdays Tractors Truck Forum from 'brownsmule' dated April 01, 2011 titled 'seeding chart IH Grain Drill'.

I suggest that you go to that link, I think you'll find the information you're looking for.

Mine is a little newer, on rubber. Not quite the same mechanisms.

You show the alfalfa adjuster. Close them up, then open to where you need. At this age there is lots of slop in the linkages, so especially for the alfalfa boxes, you just have to guess. Look in the box and see that they all are the same size meter exposed. Trial and error to see what is right. Sorry that's how it works.... Start low, you can always plant over a second time; if you start high and seed 40 lbs an acre it's an expensive oops! :) we all won't admit we've done that.

The levers on the grain seeder box should have an oats column, set for 3 bu oats, mabe 2 if you are really wanting alfalfa and the oats is a nurse crop. Again, close the levers and set by opening them, to allow for linkage slop. After a round or two, you will find one side seeds different than the other, need to fine tune so they match up both levers won't end up on the exact same setting when you get it right. Oats won't care if you are ar 2.75 or 3.25 bu, not as fussy as the alfalfa boxes will be.

Heres a factory manual for less than $20.00.

Just an FYI re paul"s comment about linkage slop: to lower a setting, run the lever all the way back to closed, then advance to the lower setting that you want. Otherwise, rate starts out inaccurate, and can drift. Doesn"t matter if the drill is new either- same procedure.

I cannot see if it has a fertilizer box or not from your pictures. The M did not have a fertilizer box built in and the one with the fertilizer box built in was an MF and that was toe only version sold in my area. I understand the M could have an after unit fertilizer box added. I had the MF and they were both on low rubber but a year ago I got a steel wheel one for my Amish friends. I do have the owners manuals for both the M and the MF and if I remember correctly the M is only even number of openers and the MF is I know odd number of openers. Don't remember if an alfalfa chart in manual or not.
