JD Model 9 Sickle Bar Mower Gear Box Shaft

Just bought a John Deere Model #9 sickle bar mower to cut my trimming time around ditches and lake. Mower is driving me crazy. 21 spline gear box shaft appears to be an odd size 1 1/8 (?) and can't find a yoke or pto adapter to fit. This shaft doesn't appear heavily worn. Can anyone please help? Thanks

Check a welding shop that does farm repairs- especially Amish if you can. If they don't have what you need, they can make it.....

Thanks. I will look into that. Was really hoping that I could find an original yoke or shaft that would fit.

So, apparently, you got the mower with the entire PTO shaft assembly missing?

You might try watching ebay over the winter and see if any come up, a PTO shaft for a #8 would be similar. I may have a spare, but it's buried under *%$%^ snow for now!

Also, measure the shaft OD again and double-check the spline count.

It did come with a shaft which I didn't check to see if it fit correctly. Pretty dumb on my part. When I attached it correctly it spun on the shaft. I bought a 1 3/8 21 spline adapter but it spun as well. I was told that the old JD cutters used a 1 1/8 shaft which appears correct but I can't verify. I have checked eBay without much luck.

Odd size 1 1/8" BIG NO, that was common size and that mower was sold mostly for the N series 9, 2, 8 NAA 6XX, 7xx, 8xx, 9xx Ford and the Ferguson TE20, TO20, TO30 & TO35 tractors and they all came with the 1 1/8" shaft only from the factory, Now if you bought the mower for a John Deere 40 or 320, 420, 330 or 430 then you would have gotten the 1 3/8" shaft. There are reducers avaible to convert the large 1 3/8" shaft to the normal 1 1/8" shaft. Both shaft sizes have same number of splines.

Thank you for the information. Any idea where to get the reducer? I have searched the internet without much luck.

Part number you need is H22202 which is NLA from JD. Parts depot doesn't have it either. JD does show they have a complete tube & yoke.

What tractor are you trying to mount it on? I may have a tractor half that is 1 3/8 if you are not to far away.

Thank you for the parts diagram. It was really helpful, and I think I was able to find a yoke thru vintage tractor parts and a local JD dealer. Expensive, but I am hopeful it will work. Thanks again.

Correct.

Take a look at the diagram below.

You might contact the local John Deere dealer and ask if the joint on tractor (Key 6) [b:654c4848f0]Z 9594 H[/b:654c4848f0] and the joint on mower (Key 14B) [b:654c4848f0]H 22202 H[/b:654c4848f0] are still available.

Hope this helps.

One has to drop the suffix letter such as the H in this case on part numbers with 5 or more numerals to correctly look up a part number info on JD parts.. Below is what I get when I look up H22202.

JDparts.com which requires free registration with a JD dealer of your choice to reveal price & availability of parts. I saw where Jo Bird stated Green parts store stated H22202 was available & it would be interesting to know if they could actually supply the part.

Would you happen to have the parts diagram for the gear box? I am
replacing the bearings and was trying to locate the correct bearings
and seals. Thanks.
