Can you really tell much difference???? I tried one several times and could not tell any difference. I think the deep freezing of the ground around here helps keep the ground aired out.

I wonder if your not right there jd. Tried one here years ago, did several grass paddocks and done half left untouched and could see no difference.
Having said that I have seen good results in the UK with then, but the ground usually doesn't freeze deep in the winter.

I have used a couple here in central MO and truly believe it helps, especially where you have a lot of traffic from feeding. However, we have not had more than 3 inches of frost this winter. If we had deep frost like Iowa it probably would accomplish more than a renovator and save the expense and time.

Yes I could tell a difference on some of my ground the grass was thicker and I did it late one fall and it killed some brush to

I use a Hay King brand. I use it frequently because it works. I'm improving my Coastal Bermuda pastures. The Bermuda sends out shoots that are anchored to the main plant root. If you cut the shoot (with the coulters), the nodules that occur along the way which have one or two roots to hang on to the ground, become the main plant root and develop into a full nutrition source....aka you just made a couple dozen plants out of one. The other nice thing is that surface disturbance is nil so you don't have the big bouncy ride that comes with a moldboard on the next pass with your disc harrow.

I acquired a new neighbor recently. The property has been used for cattle grazing for the last 40 years with no tillage what so ever. The soil is a brown medium clay and packed tight....they needed a pick axe to soften the soil so that they could use a hand operated post hole digger to dig holes for some new shrubs they were planting.

They wanted a place for a garden and I said I'd do it for them. I made a straight pass and then an X pattern over the spot with the Pasture Renovator cutting down around 10 or so inches on the last run. I came back with two trips over it with a 6' tractor mounted roto tiller. The result was soil that fell through your fingers, down as far as you could dig with your fingers and then some.

On my place, that gets the steel every year or so, it only takes one pass of each to produce a usable seed bed for drilling.

When I think about all the times I used conventional means to prepare a seed bed.....................
