Been at this farming thing since Dec 1979. Yesterday I bought a 6' 3 pt Roto Tiller. Today I put it through it's paces. Why did it take me so long to wise up? Guess because they didn't have RT 101 at Hardknocks U. On tilling in growing Austrian Peas, unbelieveable mulch and fertilization. Whadda deal!

they do a good job with one pass, slower to run than other implements but do a good job, unless you have lots of rocks...

only problem I ever had using one,
they do such a good job of tilling the ground, I just wanted to go over it again and got it in such good condition.

that when I planted my garden seed, if it came a shower of rain, before the plants broke through. Since the dirt was so fine, the ground sealed over making it hard for the young plants to break through.

other than that problem, they do a wonderful job.

If you have any weeds in your garden it will bring up all kinds of seeds and you will wonder where they came from.
Been using one on the gardens for almost 20 years and it does beat a harrow. Works a lot better on plowed ground not so much on sod. In finer soils it will crust as wellmax said.

Preparing food plots in hard WNY soil with lots of rocks. We have found that things go better in sod ground if you bottom plow in the spring and then rototill just before you plant. You do have to go very slow and a lot of tractors don't have a creeper gear. As with all tilling, you can set up a hard pan that you have to break with a bottom plow or chisel plow.
