John Deere 8W sickle mower

Ok, I found a J D 8W sickle mower on a 3pt hookup. My problem is my Farmall 450 is fast hitch.

First, what's your opinion of the 8W; this one seems in good shape, little rust, good paint, but I haven't seen it in person.

Second, how hard is it to hook this little jewel to my fast hitch tractor? I aspire to cut a few acres of hay and maybe cut some fencerows with it.

Thanks

IH had a fast hitch converter to hook up 3-pt equipment to a fast hitch. There were
two style of points on them. The small points were for the 230/240 and the large points
were for the 400/450/560. I have a couple of them for my fast hitch tractors.

An 8 or 8W is not a 3 point hitch mower but a semi mount that is carried by a rigid drawbar on the front and an 8" caster wheel on the back. The 3 point version is 9 or 9W and the W stands for wide as in having the wheels set out for cultivating 40" corn rows. I understand the fast hitch arms can be set so that they are rigid, not being able to move either up or down with pressure on the arms. If that is so then just use the cross drawbar that goes between the fast hitch prongs. That will work with a mower that bolts to a drawbar. It will not work if the mower has the quick hitch brackets on it. Then you need a special hitch.

As others have mentioined, 8W not a 3 point hookup. I used an 8W for several years. It is a good mower. Believe it was supposed to be a update from the classic #5. If it is in fact a 8W it would have the JD "quickhitch" on it that hooks to the adaptors you see on a lot of older JDs, basically a couple large pins that are on the drawbar. I think you could make an adaptor to go on your fast hitch to hook the mower to with fast hitch arms locked in the lower position, like if you are using a drawbar on it. You would then raise and lower the sickle with a hydraulic cylinder. They are a good mower when, as with any mower, they are adjustec correctly and in good shape.

As near as I can tell this mower has the quick hitch mounts. Two large eyes on either side. I'm not sure how I would convert that to a IH fast hitch.
Ideas anyone?

Photo below shows hitch adapter plate that JD offered for an IHC fast hitch tractor for a model 8W mower. I don't understand how plate is intended to mount to IHC tractor

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the rubber pad (Key 3), L.H. bracket (Key 4), bracket (Key 11), and R.H. bracket (Key 14).

You might consider making a "drawbar extension".

Measure the distance from outside the L.H. bracket to outside the R.H. bracket.

Cut a piece of 2" pipe/tubing to that length.

Measure the distance from inside to inside of the I.H. quick hitch.

Cut a piece of flat stock to that length.

Weld the flat stock to the pipe/tubing.

Drill holes in the flat stock to match the holes in the quick hitch.

Bolt the "drawbar extension" to the quick hitch.

Take a look at the drawing below.

You might consider using 2" ID radiator hose for the rubber pad.

Hope this helps.

James, thanks for the idea. Will hollow pipe carry the load or do I need round stock? The mower has rubber pads in the eyes for the hitch.

Omaha...I'll never forget fishing near there, I cast a lure at a log, did a slow retrieve and when I looked back up to cast again the "log" had grown legs and was gone. Real creepy feeling.

Look thru the parts catalog on Deere's website various mounting brackets were available and could be more than likely fabricated. I also own an 8W great little mower. Do not let mounting the mower discourage you. At one point in time my father was using a #5 with a John Deere 2040, looing thru the parts catalogs for the 38 mounting brackets were offered for a similar tractor 1020, 2020, 2030 etc. and a neighbor fabricated us the bracket. Only issue I ever had with the 8w was getting parts dealer to order a pittman for 8w and not an 8, if this happens your pittman will be exactly 10" to short.
