Round baler + tractor fire extinguisher

I may know enough to be dangerous about these- I guess you want a pressurized water extinguisher at the 5 gallon capacity for the baler? Where is best place to get one AND a mounting bracket? Have been advised to not buy a First alert or Kidde ?supposedly junky. Of course this brings up the thought of also having one mounted on the tractor as well. What should that one be?

I wonder if a 15 gallon ATV spot sprayer would work ?

I guess it would depend how big the fire was when it was discovered.

May be a lot of messing around mounting it and then you need power to run the pump and you will probably be unhooking the tractor from the baler if the baler is on fire.

I've always considered adequate fire insurance to be a better option.... as a former fire fighter, there is personal risk any time you attempt to tackle a fire, particularly without turnout gear. The cost of the premium for for fire insurance on my tractor and baler for 10 years is less than my emergency room copay on my health insurance.

Just carry an all purpose extinguisher....easily moved from one machine to another....and if that won't put out the fire, 5 gallons of water likely wouldn't either. Ben

spot sprayer is a good idea. i have a 1000 gallon tanker with a 3 inch trash pump for fires. if i am burning off ditches or burning brush, i have the tanker hooked to my m and on site. i picked up a canvas fire hose and have it hooked to the trash pump. open a valve and yank the rope on the trash pump, and you got a good water supply. i have used it a couple times at my neighbors. hes a light it and leave it sort of fellow. put out his bean field twice already.

You can get one of those water type stainless steel extenguishers at just about any welding supply house in my area, they are around $100 and get the mounting bracket also, I think they hold about 3 gallons. Its standard equipment in my hay field, Texas. They can be filled with water and pressurized with an air hose, that pretty cheap insurance if you ask me, also carry a decent sized all purpose extinguisher on the tractor and one in the truck.

I would second the notion of having good insurance!

Personally I don't carry an extinguisher. Usually just a pop bottle of water.. that has been sufficient to put out any smolder fires on the Claas drum baler I have. That said.... it wouldn't do squat if you have a fire start up on your typical belt baler. Carrying a 3 gallon pressure can and a 20# ABC would be a good idea... but have at least the water can because it will do more than the ABC if you actually get crop burning in the machine. Water will penetrate and cool.

JD factory water type fire extinguisher holds 2-1/2 gallons. I also put a chemical called Fire Out in with the water. A few squirts of liquid dish soap could be used instead of Fire Out.

I agree any rd baler should be on an insurance policy. I've had the misfortune of having a rd baler several yrs back.

I have one on my baler I bought from JD the thing about having one is you can SEND and jet of water right where you want it to go,, example a hot bearing/shaft that ignited the fire,, but you have to catch it before its a inferno to do any good,, Thankfully I have only had to use mine once and I may well have not needed to but I had a bearing go on the chain drive side and it stared some oil soaked chaff burning,, I could have just used my hand to put out what was burning but thought the hot steel would just light it again,, so I gave it a couple short squirts but not so much as to affect the temper in the shaft

I have a standard 2.5 gal pressurized water extinguisher that is mounted on the front of the baler. I've used it to put out a few fires, not on the baler, so far. I add a teaspoon or so of dish soap to the water, makes it "wetter" and the suds help put out the fire too. For the tractor a small ABC type will be a big help. Insurance doesn't always pay the whole replacement cost. I can't imagine just walking away from a baler or tractor fire without trying to put it out.

I had my first fire in 37 years in 2015. I normally check my bearings and keep my baler shedded and adequately lubed but I apparently missed a sealed bearing on the end roller of the lift arms. I was making a turn and accidentally saw the smoke. Dumped the near full bale and luckily was within 100' of my shop with hose and water. The bale didn't catch, just the chaff lying on the belts so I suffered no damage. I do carry a 2 gallon pump up sprayer in the cab.
