I came across a generator today that is for sale. It has an IH v-8 that runsure on propane, is an 80 kw unit with the auto transfer switch. Any idea what size this engine could be or how I would find out?

That could well be one of many. Find some casting codes ate and one may even give you the cubic inch it is. Could be the common 345 or with that big a KW could be the big 600 cubic inch engine

Oops, I meant to post this on the IH board. Thanks old, I'm thinking it's an 80's or so IH. It has an intake manifold and Valley pan like a big block chrysler but has IH stampings.

I have a couple old IH trucks with the big block 600 in them and those where some big engines for sure

Wow, I hadn't even thought about the math. And since propane makes a little less power than gas...

We used to have a similar one, but stationary rather than on trailer at our local hospital where I worked on maintenance crew for a while. It had a water pump on each bank of V8, and was in the upper 300 cubic inch range. That has been over 40 years ago, so memories are not real clear. If you intend to use it for standy you better have a big need, If I remember correctly we figured that on Natural gas it cost around $35 to $40 per hour to run. It was a real fuel hog.

It has the transfer switch there. At a hog confinement so I'm not sure how good it is.

Greg,

You said that was a single phase unit, if still interested, post more info, plenty here to help with preliminary design and evaluation. The engine is probably the easiest and cheapest part to correct if not working
