John deer 2 row 71 planter

I have purchased a 2 row John Deere 71 planter. I was wanting to know what options are there to mount a side dresser to this planter.

The Deere #71 planter units are individually self-contained and the ways in which they can be
rigged up is almost endless. What kind of system you need is dependant on the toolbar
arrangement they are mounted on. The fertilizer equipment that was marketed for them was equally
self-contained and mounted on the toolbar separately from the planter units. In other words, the
planting and fertilizer systems didn't really have anything to do with each other other than that
they were mounted on the same toolbar. If you have a manual (which is almost mandatory for a
planter so you know seeding rates) the optional fertilizer equipment is shown and described.

If your units have "fenders" along side the press wheel there were herbicide/insecticide boxes
that could be mounted on them to drop material in a variety of places on the planter. I modified
my pesticide boxes by enlarging the metering slots with a rotary file which allows them to handle
fertilizer. However, you'll never get anywhere near the application rate of the actual
fertilizer system using this method. The fertilizer will also not be placed under the surface
like the real system.

By the way, you made an excellent choice with the 71's - they are very good planter units. I
have three of them, a two-row set-up for the field and a single unit on a Cat 0 hitch for the
garden. With the right plates (which are readily available) they can plant almost anything.

I'm new to using a planter I'm going to mainly use it to plant corn to hunt over during deer season. I'm trying to upload a photo of the planter [/img]

Yetter bought the design from JD a few years ago and makes them still.

You might find some ideas on the Yetter web site.

here is a picture of my older John Deere planter,
similar to yours but with fertilizer boxes.
I believe my model is a 25 B planter from the late 50's to early 60's time period.

ground my be prepared, not a hard land planter.
