Chisel plow size

I am looking at getting a chisel plow for my 1086 IH
I have 20" on the rear and dont want to run duals
how many shank plow can i pull
I would like to pull the plow deep and make pretty good time with it also
Thanks for any help or suggestions

It does depend on your dirt, and other stuff. I'm assuming 2 inch strait chisels. Wider, curved take more hp of course. Lighter soil than mine
maybe you can do more, but without duals I'd stick to 10. Actually in my soils 8 or 9 would be good, but most folk have lighter soils than my
yellow clays.

im looking at a 7 shank plow
my thinking is it will be small enogh that i can pull it deep and
wide enough it covers the tractor width

I run a 7 shank Krause 2800 disc chisel with
a deere 4430 with 20.8-38 tires. I pulled it
this fall without duels. Did well. Some
fields it plays with it, others it knows
it's back there. Went 4.5mph-6mph depending
on the dirt.

I have a 9 shank, twisted shovel pull type, pull it with a 200AC, no duals. Front end is very light, seriously considering dropping 2 shanks. have heavy soil.

If you are only planning on running singles you can take horsepower out of the equation because you wont have enough footprint to hook it to the ground anyway. No matter what soil you have if you have any sort of hills to speak of you are looking at 9 shank max on the three point or 7 if your going pull type.

I would say 7-9, run 12-15inches deep, and let her eat. depends on how much weight, my soils tend to be hard to work until dry, but won't dry much until worked. I have pulled those chisel plows with 100hp 2wd tractors, and pulled a 10 or 12 shank, but you can't go deep at all, it just stops you. My soil is heavy and irrigated. Sandy soil pulls easier but also spins easier. needs better tires and more weight.

Without duals,5,maybe 7. I pull a 9 with 135 horses and 18.4 38 duals. If you want to get it down where it'll do some good,9 is too many.

Glad somebody can tell the truth instead of bragging on what their tractors can do in ideal conditions. Those things pull hard when you get them in the ground where they'll do some good, simple as that.

Thanks guys for all your replys
After listening to all your suggestion I think the 7 shank will give me what I am looking for

I think you'll be happy with it. If you use a three inch twisted shovel, might still be a handful in some going.

You talking about a chisel plow or a disc chisel?

A disc chisel you could pull a 7 shank they take alot more HP
but Just a regular chisel takes less hp and a healthy 1086 will pull a 9shank just fine probably even an 11 shank with duals
Neighbor pulled a 11 shank 3pt chisel plow with a 1066. another Friend pulled an 11 shank with an 1850 oliver but I doubt he went to deep. I have seen guys with a JD4020, IH856, Oliver 1850
pull a 9 shank 3 point plow.
