I just recently purchased my 1st tractor and also a bush hog. The Bush hog did not come with the shaft that connect to the pto. The only thing sticking from the Bush hog is about a 10inch shaft shaped like a triangle and I measured it from top point to the side across and it was 1 1/2 inch tube. What size and type shaft would I need to get?

Better off getting a new complete shaft for it. Take it off where it mounts to the gear box and measure from that shaft to the Pto on the back of the tractor.

There are about 10 different sizes and shapes of PTO shafts so the best way to find the correct part is to take what you have in with you to a farm and home store and see if you can match it up. Or get a whole new shaft but again I'd take what you have to as to get the correct end for where it hooks to the hog

The 10 inch shaft doesn't sound like it is long enough. May have to get a new one.

Is it a Bush Hog? or is it an SOB (some
other brand)?
If it's a Bush Hog? you can go to a dealer
and buy any part for most any model they
ever made. If it's an SOB it's a rotary
cutter or shredder and if you need parts
well, you're on your own.

cb,
I have one of the cheaper rotary cutters on the market, but it does a good job of cutting weeds and grass for me,

note in the picture the length of the pto shaft, this unit fits a TO35 Ferguson tractor,

it uses a soft shear bolt (grade 5) that connects the pto shaft to the shaft of the cutter gear box,

note to file: a chain saw and rotary cutter are about the two most dangerous tools around the farm, if your tractor does not have an independent pto, then you will need an over riding clutch, you need to check this out, before you start sawing and cutting on your new pto shaft.
others can explain it better

need to know what tractor you have.
stay safe,

Here is a complete drive shaft with a slip-clutch (if you don't already have one) at a pretty good price, not sure it will fit your cutter.

See if you can find a supplier of that brand or look at TSC..they sell Slip-Clutches and PTO sections and parts..should be able to help you.
