I just bought a 2005 vermeer rebel 5400 baler
Was told by the previous owner that I need to turn off the pto everytime I eject the bale, then I was told by some other hay guys that I don't need to. My question is do I or do I not need to? Can't seam to finally an answer online!

You are supposed to turn the pto off to dump the bale. Some can get away without turning it off if the tractor has fast enough hydraulics.
What happens the the belts are turning the bale the opposite way of it rolling out of the baler. This can cause hay to be pulled up in a tuff
or broken twines. Also the bale ramp holds the bale up longer making this worse. When I run a 5400 Rebel I cut the pto off before dumping and
cut it back on before or while lowering the gate. Turning it on before tailgate lock helps clear chaff from the baler and makes sure that the
belts don't pinch.
If you did not get an operators manual they are free from Vermeer call the 800 number on the Vermeer website and have your complete serial
number.
