John Deere one way

I have never seen a one way in person. I think I would like one to play with. How wide a swath would one be with I think about 32 blades with 9" spacing and what size tractor would be needed to pull it. Are they used as a primary tillage tool or what else. Would it be good for chopping corn stalks? Thanks

According to 1800 series Surflex parts catalog a 32' with 64 disks was offered.

I'm assuming that it has 32 discs on 2 gangs, or 16 discs on front and 16 on rear.
16 discs = 15 9" spools , or about 11.5' in width. I would think that if my assumptions are correct, a 75 HP tractor should be fine.
Just my 2 cents worth, and worth exactly that. Dave

32 blades looks like 16 foot machine.

Grew up with a M and M 10' pulled with a 50 horse WR 9 McCormick-Deering.

Primary tillage if swung back to narrower cut. Swung wider could be primary or secondary tillage depending on depth of cut. Pulled easier than 5-14" plow.

This one, i only saw a picture of. It looked like about 32 blades and the description said 9" spacing. It was John Deere and I have no idea
what the model. I wondered if my 4020 or 820 might pull it. I have farmed most of my life, but know nothing about a one way, except they look
cool. That from a 65 yr. old man.

Back when I was employed by JD dealer a local dairyman had three 21 disk surflexs?(one ways) that his employees drove 3 JD R's to pull them. I think a 4020 will pull the 32 disk one way.

I'm running a 3 pt 7', 10 ea per gang 22" (thereabouts) discs, 9" spaced, heavy framed offset with 2 150# JD wheel weights on top in Houston
Black Clay at a good clip with my 65 engine hp Branson 6530C 4wd. A very good matchup with the 4wd. 2wd wouldn't do it on that size
tractor.

The 16 ft JD oneways, with their humongous torque equalizing tail wheel were fairly popular around here back in '79 when I got here but haven't
seen any for many years. Can't use a moldboard due to clay gumming up, although many have tried and the relics attest to that fact. Don't
know how many ponies it took to drag them for those commenting on that subject.

Dad bought a new back in the early 50's. 12' and we first pulled it with a D JD. Later with a 730 JD. They like to swing back and not trail straight if the ground is uneven or you have hard/dry spots. Ours was a lever lift and you could only turn to the left so they were kinda hard to learn to operate. They were used widely in western Kansas and I still see one at a farm sale occasionally. Usually sell to the scrappers. I think the popularity of the off-set disks led to the demise of the one-way. I have one on steel that I need to go pick up from a neighbor but I think it is probably only a 8 or 9'.

On big iron auction this Wednesday there is a John Deere one-way for auction, looks in good shape, it's at 90 dollars right now,it is in Kansas
