Pipe for a hay wagon reach

I have the front and back half to an old hay wagon. Its a light duty gear. Going to make it 16 ft bed. What is a good plan for a distance to have the axles set at. Also how far should the pipe reach go past the bolt hole to have it be strongest. Thanks

To be the strongest it can be the pipe should stick out the back a tad bit. But depending on how and what you use for the rails also depends on how strong it is. Last one I rebuilt I use 2X6 tube steel for the rails so it was extra strong. I still remember back when I was baling straw for the state of Missouri we had a hay wagon that the guy had built but did not put a pipe between the front and rear of it and had the rear end drop into a hole and I pulled the wagon in half. All I saw when it happened was straw bales and black kids flying every where

About 6" in front of front tires and 2' in back of the back tires and close to back end of bed for a hitch to pull a second wagon or to hook a pusher bar to for positioning the loaded wagon. Tire size comes into the factor on this. Larger tire shorter the coupling pole to get the edge of tire at proper place. Now if you are not pulling behind baler position not as much importance as with baler chute or kicker.

I haul mine with a pickup a lot, so I keep the rear wheels as far back as possible, to reduce sway. With 18' wagons, I usually have to extend the reach - I use 2-1/2" schedule 40 black steel pipe

Not sure what you mean by stick out the back? Like cut thru the rear axle and let the pipe thru? Not much purpose to that in my opinion

Most wagons of that type are set up so on the back axle you can in fact have the pipe run out the back for more then one reason.
#1 is make them a tad bit stronger and
#2 that way you have place for a way to hook another wagon on behind and be able to pull mutipal wagons

Interesting never saw one like that, both my new Holland and another unknown brand running gear I had just had a tab on back for a hitch and the hole was blind that the pipe went into

All the ones I have messed with had a open hole so you could stick the pipe out the back as far as you wanted to. Even seen where some people would have the pipe out the back a long ways and the over hang of the bed of the wagon way out the back and then use a V shaped brace to add strength to the back over hang
