I should have known

Recently I posted about having a Case 281 side delivery hay rake with only one wheel drive. I should have known you guys know far more than what I do, and you were right, after taking the second hub off and cleaning it, at one time it also was a drive wheel, but parts had been broken off so it now is just an idle wheel. The rake still works, but would be better if complete. The rest for the spring, spring and dog are all missing. I will be using it very little, so not worried about it.

Many thanks to all for your information

Word to the wise "a bigger hammer does not make an oversize seal fit"

If you don't know something the best thing to do is ask! The only dumb question is the question not asked, or so they tell me! LOL

When you turn either direction, you can hear the ratchet click on some rakes, if they are working. Also - if one ratchet is stuck or broken in some way, the one wheel that is driving the reel will often slip in heavy hay.

You probably already knew that :~)

We are finding that at times on the steel wheel hay rakes that I work on, so far have been able to find replacements. The person that gets them has said that he could rebuild them to take the dog and spring and years ago I had some doges made, at that time I did not have the tools I now have but I believe I could make a dog if needed with none being avaible. A good welder should be able to replace the broken off parts.

It is only going to be used on a very limited basis , but if necessary, I will maybe do a rebuild on it. I have the machines to make a dog, but all takes a lot of time and did not pay that much for the rake and I am not in the hay business.

When I purchased the rake I did not pay a lot for it and it is only going to get limited use. It will not be used in the hay business, so it probably will be ok for what we are going to do with it

I am learning what to look for on tractors and trailers, it has been an education.

One of the reasons I came back here, use to post long ago on the Farmall Forum, moved on. I just recently purchase a tractor and trailer. Any time you purchase something used, a guy told me something long ago " that person is not getting rid of it just because it is to good for him to own" It has been an education , but I know here there are people that know a whole lot more than I do and appreciate their help.

If you're going to go with just one wheel drive, I would make it the left wheel (if they're interchangeable) While raking, you're usually turning to the right - if the right wheel is the drive wheel, it'll slow the rake down quite a bit in the turns.

Actually possibly stop the real completely if you are turning sharply enough to stop the driveing tire.
