My New Holland 256 is driven by both wheels. Winter project is a JD 350A, PTO driven. Mark(quoted from post at 08:55:32 12/09/16) Side Delivery hay rakes - are they all just one wheel driven?
(quoted from post at 15:00:31 12/09/16) No they are driven by two wheels, unless the dogs are bad in one then you find that out turning.
(quoted from post at 17:41:07 12/09/16) I a lot depends on the brand and how old it is. I had a big wheel rake with 36 inch tires that was driven by one wheel and I had a NH rake that had a ratchet in both wheels so it was 2 wheel drive. The IH rake I use right now is suppose to be 2 wheel drive but who ever had it before me removed the springs and levers so it is one wheel drive. I'd love to fix it but so far not found the parts for it and really had not tried all that hard to find them since it has worked that way for years
(quoted from post at 18:33:59 12/09/16) Your Case 281 rake is driven by both wheels. There is a dog clutch on each wheel hub. See pics of LH and RH wheel hubs.

I had a NH 55 rake which had the ratchets in both hubs. If one wasn't working the basket speed changed when turning. I wound up replacing both hubs and backing plates, plus the dogs(ratchets) on both sides, plus the sleeve bearings in both hubs, plus the springs occasionally. The NH had transport latches that locked the ratchets out of engagement so the wheels would free wheel. I'm wondering if NH parts would fit your rake.

(quoted from post at 19:14:58 12/12/16) We had a Ford rake back in the 70's that was ground driven by only one wheel. It worked fine.
(quoted from post at 07:02:08 01/04/17) Fred,
I'm looking to find a Pawl For my drivers side hub on my right handed rake. Are the left and the right side identical? Their are two that drive the rake but one of mine is mince meat and the other is badly worn. Any leads on were to order parts? I think donors are now the only option.
(quoted from post at 17:07:06 01/04/17) I agree theirs I problem with the pawls. Especially the side not driven by the driveline. My tires are water filled for a little better traction.I really like the design and width of the rake. I'm hoping to acquire a left hand to make a set. The only parts I've found is an operators manuel online. Parts are available for a little older and a little newer model. Ours has a gray area and gets easily confused. I wanna say it's made in the mid-60's.
id the parts for the Nh55 resemble these 281's Keh?(quoted from post at 18:15:21 12/10/16)

I looked the parts up on messicks. The axle housing has different variances. The only thing that looks interchangeable is possible parts to the main gearbox.(quoted from post at 18:15:21 12/10/16)

I'll be fabricating something up before spring thats for sure.(quoted from post at 09:38:56 01/22/17) Could you make a pawl or have one made. I would think a fabricator or blacksmith could fix you up.
