Shop generator not working

Fired up my generator this afternoon
Motor ran fine, but no electrical power output,

Had to excite the generator

While engine was running, I plugged in a 110 volt electric drill, held the trigger in,

Then I rotated the drill chuck, apparently this action sends a spark back to the generator,

Then the drill starts turning as the generator starts producing power,

I have had to do this a few times over the years when the generator had not been run in a while,

If any of you have a generator that does not produce power, you might try this redneck fix, sometimes it will work,

Neat way to excite a field. It'd never work for me---I can't even excite the wife anymore......

This has worked for me. I was told (or read) that a variable speed drill will not work for this. I never tried to use a VS drill, I have an old single speed drill that I have used successfully.
