We all know New Holland produced some extremely popular seven and nine foot haybines in the past (472,474,488, 489, older 460 series, etc). I rarely see the big 495 12 foot model around much. Were there shortcomings with the 495? Seems you can?t give them away. The gooseneck 499 seems to be much more popular.

I have a 490. I like it but it takes the whole road to move it. Also has one long cutter bar that is the weak link. Some of the newer ones have 2 bars I think.

I have a 499.It's a hay cutting fool.No real'problem areas' that I've noticed. I think the 495 is the same machine with a different tounge/hitch.I especially like that it can leave a 3 ft wide windrow,or lay it flat in a 9' swath for fast drying. The twin sickle is good to. The fact that you can only go in circles is definitely a 'deal killer' for most, plus it's wide and hard to move from field to field. However, you can go 'up and down'.Open up 3 to 5 windrows on ends(what is comfortable/convenient for you),then just 'eyeball' a land about 6 to 8 windrows wide and cut down and back.I started with an old and very used Hesston PT 12(same type of machine) and that's how I cut. Cut ALOT of acres before it fell in a heap.If you're only cutting your own and not moveing down the road,it would serve you well.

I harvest 90 acres of hay three times a year with one.The down side of owning one is breaking them down for transport. When I got mine home years ago I made all my gates large enough to go through.Good machine otherwise.Scott
