JD 348 baler

Son just bought a 5 Y.O. seldom used 348 baler about 2 weeks ago. We did the modifications to fit our baling system and tractors. Although the cutting this past week was thin compared to 1st cutting, we raked 2 rows together (26' of cut) and baled yesterday (Nov 10). We had a 328 and a 327 baler operating at the same time. There is no doubt the 348 is a big step ahead of the previous models. It had plastic twine and did a beautiful job. However we ran it out of plastic and put in a pair of sisal spools (7200'). It just made a mess!!! I am suspecting it has bill hooks made for plastic, but have not yet checked parts numbers to confirm. I pulled the spools of plastic out of the 327 and traded them into the 348, using the sisal in the 327. Both balers worked just fine. The 327 doesn't care what twine is put in, but the 348 sure is fussy.

Your thoughts??

Both balers are equipped with same multi-twine billhooks. Actually all three. That is unless someone has installed sisal twine billhooks in the 328 and 327

Perhaps the 348 was making heavier bales, thus affecting the knotting???

Should have all twine hooks in all of those balers.... that said... you still need to adjust them to the twine being used. I suspect with some tweaking the 348 would run sisal just fine... but then who would really want to? I know my 327 generally needs to be readjusted to run one or the other depending on the weight of the twine. I run all poly now anyway..

The first time that I bought plastic twine, I read what it said on the label. It said "works well in all properly adjusted knotters" I bet that the sisal would work just fine if you went through the adjustments and got everything set to spec.

Don't know if this will help - but may at least help you identify which bill hook you have.

Here is a pic from the online manual of the bill hooks - multi twine and sisal twine.

And a link to the online manual.

Looking forward to hearing your experiences with the 348.

Good luck,
Bill
