vermeer 504c round baler

i found an old vermeer 504c round baler and gave scrap price for it. does anyone have any experiance with this model? i got spoiled working on my dads farm with a new holland auto tie so this machine is a strange animal to me. it has manual tie. im not planning on spending much money on it as would be a waste but if it rolls my few rolls of hay till i can afford a real baler i would be satisfied. one thing that does need attention is rubber coated starting roller.thaught about spraying on some rubber coating to give hay something to grip to. any advise or comments would be greatly appriciated

We had one for years. A real PITA to operate. Closed throat, so clogged a lot. Hay must be absolutely dry to bale. Good luck.

I have one, it is was a Badger model but made by Vermeer as the 504c. I use it as a back up and it works ok for me, most years roll 50-75 per year. Yes the hay must be dry to work correctly. When I say dry, I mean small square dry for grass hay. I would only use it for grass hay. I have found that larger windrows work best with a full 4-ft width. In smaller windrows you really need to steer and swerve in a side to side direction fast when you first start on a windrow to start the pickup so that the hay starts rolling evenly and not lump on one side, which will cause you to abort as the rubber get mangled. When that happens, lift up gate a dump and start over. On my 4 speed MF 165 I start a windrow in 3rd gear low. After the rolls start I slow down to avoid clogging and it is easier going. Only difficult part is getting the roll to start consistently, windrow width and tractor speed important, and dry hay. The other advice is when you approach a new windrow to have the gate all the way up and pto running and lower gate and then get started. That works better than engaging pto when the gate is already down. Also with gate up and pto running it cleans out much of the chaf and residual hay on rollers. Good luck

We had one. But previous owner had. Put wide belts on it except for two near the middle. Try screwing a piece or three of belting to the roller. Self taping screws on each end. It will make you appreciate your next baler.

what holds the string on tie arm? i didnt see a hole to go in through rod. i asume it would need to hold firm but still allow to thread

I never ran a 504 C I have put 15,000 or so through my 505 SI Vermeer baler,, yes it has auto tie,, I will never again even consider one without it,, I ran NH and JD as well,, good balers as well,, I like my monitor better than the same age NH have but that's just a person thing for me,, I knew of at least a dozen of that series used here for many years like many things,,, things are changed and improved,, like I told a friend when he bought his first round baler about 8 years ago and it was a manual tie,, You have not ran a auto tie so you do not know yet what you are missing,,, he ran his three or four years and got along fine,,, for a few bales you should be able too as well,, mine is Very easy to start a bale,, but you do have to start a bale different in dry crops but still works very well, the tie system works Very well and is fast compared to the 5x6 balers, if and when I buy another baler it will be a Vermeer

is your baler an open throat? i understand running hay between the closed throat rollers can be quite challanging. the only thing i didnt like about the new holland auto tie was on the last windrow, it might tie with only a little hay left and you eiter had to make a midget bale or haul it home and dump out for cows.

you didn't buy it on a sale by White,SD did you? I watched one sell for less than $100 there, thought about bidding on it but the rubber was worn out, we ran a 605C for years so it wouldn't have been anything new, if you can run a C baler you can run anything, saying that not everyone can get the knack for running one

I don't understand your issue with auto warp. If it doesn't fit into the second to last bale you make a small one. No different than most round balers. At least you can tie a small bale with a NH. With the soft center balers you have a bigger problem.

I just bought a 605C. It makes hay. No, it isn't easy, but a new baler costs 30 times as much.

I haven't used this place, but a guy on another forum reported that they recoated his rubber roller for $100 + shipping.
