disc tiller

In the area where I live, I have never seen a disc tiller or "one way" used. I think I would like one for shows and to play. I don't have any idea how much power they require, or what size to look for. I think I might want to put it behind my John Deere 820. I know I will need to travel a ways to find one, but that's part of the adventure. When it comes to size do you go by number of blades or feet of width? I have spent almost 60 years using moldboard plows and disc harrows, but know nothing about one ways. I need educating.

Most one-ways go for essentially scrap price at consignment auctions here in Kansas - your travel expenses will probably exceed the purchase price if you buy in this area. As for the size, your 820 will pull just about any one-way you'll find (assuming of course that it is the big version and not the 3-cyl utility). Your tractor would look fine with a 12-footer but it would be perfectly happy with something even wider. However, hauling it around to shows might get to be a problem if it is too big. That the length on a trailer is quite a bit more than the working width by the time you straighten it out and add the length of the rear wheels and hitch.

There would have been a lot of 820's and similar tractors that spent the majority of their time in front of a one-way in the high plains years ago.

Had one that was about 8' if i remember correctly and pulled it with an AR Deere 1950 model at 39PTO HP. Heavy-heavy-heavy unit.

Back when I was employed at local JD dealership a dairyman had 3 JD R's that he utilized to pull three 21 disk JD Surflex's disk tillers. IIRC a 21 disk set for hard soil would cover about 10 or 11 ft. On my Dad's farm in my youth I drove a JD B pulling a 8 disk disk tiller.

Brendon is right about many in use here in wheat country. My Dad bought a new JD one-way I think it was about a 12' that we pulled first with a D and later with a 730. I worked for a neighbor a couple of summers and he had an 820 which I used to pull one and I think it was about a 12' also. Lots of the older disk tiller/one-ways were on steel wheels. A friend has an old JD model, about an 8' or maybe even less, on steel for me, plus an old JD moldboard plow. I just need to go pick them up.

Thanks guys for the help. I looked at one on purple wave. It says it has 18 blades and is 14 ft wide. Looks OK in the pictures. I know it will take a road trip to aquire one. This one is in Kansas.
