Glencoe soil saver-rigid shanks

I have been looking for a 9 shank disc chisel for corn stalks instead of my 5500 IH. I get a few long pieces of stalks that get run down and the stalk cutter doesn't pick them up. I thought a disc chisel might work better. There use to be several of them around of many makes but they are getting hard to find. My first choices would be a 6500 CIH or a Glencoe. Either seemed to work ok. I found a Glencoe that has no springs on the shanks. I assume it has shear bolts. We don't have any rock to speak of. We used to trip a blow beam very seldomly and was wondering if one without spring shanks would work ok and if this was an option or what.

Don't think I've ever seen that. We have some (ha ha, some) rock around here, can't imagine running one here without springs. You see a lot of ihc versions like you mention with a broken shank around here. Wife has rolled up several rock with my spring loaded Glenco that my little loader can barely lift.

IF it has shear pins you would be fine in your soil. It sounds like you have few things to trip a shank.

Evidently Glencoe went in with Farmhand. Did Agco aquire them evidently? Is there parts beyond common wear items available for them anymore like shanks , springs ect. if a person bought one with spring shanks? They always seemed to work ok but many went to DMI units. I would love to have a 527B DMI if I had the footing to pull it.

I"ve never seen one without spring shanks, but like paul, this area is not shy about sprouting stones! The factory was about 50 miles from me, and I went to their closeout auction in the 90s. I had a 15 shank soil saver behind a 2470 Case, and still have a plain 12 shank chisel that I bought new in "80. Needed one shank in all these years, and bought that at an AC dealer. I was using it to "find" rocks, cuz it was so good at pulling them out.

Made the mistake of backing over the rock, rather than make another pass to pop it out. Those shanks don"t take any reverse force- only time I broke one. They are good at ripping out old fence lines- where the broken posts are, barbed wire, rocks that have been piled in them for years.

You should have no problems in your soil. They are built tough, and will stand up to abuse.
