Sheller Shoe Wooden Guides Lub

I have the Shoe out of a New Idea 329 Super Sheller. The Shoe is guided by a wood block on each side. As I put this back together, should I lube the wood surface that interfaces with the metal side of the shoe?

If I do lube it, what should I use? Should I use regular grease, oil, etc? Or, should it be left dry so as to not attract dirt?

Thanks. Paul.

When new were put in our baler they were put in dry so would not pick up dirt to make problems. Think from factory were maple but do not know.

Thanks Guys for the input. I put them together dry so they would not attract dirt. I do like the linseed oil idea. Thanks again. Paul
