Bought this tedder a couple of weeks ago. I new it needed work but the price was low and I figured I had til spring to fix it. Well weathers looking good this week and I mowed hay all day. Tedder had 3 bent arms and would not pass each other. I took them off and got them straightened. I see it got grease fittings on top of the spinner housings. What kind of grease and how much do I put in those. Main gearbox has a filler plug on top , what kind and about how much? As far as adjusting it to ted. Do they run level? Or tilted? All I ever had was a Pequea fluffer so I am really looking forward to using this wide tedder. Thanks

The grease fittings just take any good grease. There are just bearings/bushing in the top of the housings. The gearbox uses regular gear oil. No need for anything fancy, it is just a set of bevel gears.

As for operation you tilt the tedder forward until the tines are just clearing the ground but still picking up most of the hay.

Now some tips. Many guys try to ted with the tedder running at 540 PTO speed. THAT beats the heck out of the hay and knocks leaves off.
1) Try to ted when the hay has moisture in it. So either when it is still green or early in the mornings while it is still tough. I usually mow one day and ted the next morning.
2) Just run enough PTO speed to lift and spread the windrows out. I usually ted with a JD 4020. I run in 6th gear at maybe 1300-1400 engine RPM. That keeps a fairly good ground speed but keeps the PTO speed down so it is gentle with the hay.

Tedders are a simple machine that are not hard to use IF you think about what your doing. They can easily pay for themselves in better hay due to shorted drying times. You can easily knock a day off the cure time.

What JD Seller said X2. And don't do what my boys do and let the tips of the tines scrape the ground. Go through a lot of ties that way!

X3 - What JD Seller said.

These tedders are IMHO somewhat fragile, so lower than 540 rpms helps with not beating them to death too.

I set my tedder such that the front tines are touching the top of the toe on my boot. Works great - for us.
