5 X5 Bales left in the field for 1 month

I baled on the 6th of July and couldn't get back to load the bales and put them in the barn until a month later. The hay is in good condition but all of the bales had the twine rotted of on the bottom from sitting in the field. (wet year) The twine was Gold sisal. I am thinking of using poly next year just in case I can't put the hay in the barn after baling right away. Any advice so I don't have to go thru another learning year?

Most guys use plastic for just that reasaon. Shouldn't be any troubles.

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I can put the hay up soon
after it is baled next year. I will use poly just in case.

UV resistant (which all around here claim to be) plastic twine is available in 110 to 140# test. Bales sit for years and it's still intact. Price varies with # test. I tried both, this year using the 110 vs 140 as it is cheaper and seems to be easier for the baler to cut at the end of the tie cycle. We'll see how it holds up. Usually sold in 2-10,000' rolls to a box for around $35 if my memory serves me.

On a true 5x6 bale with ties roughly 2" apart that works out to about 7 cents a bale for string.

Each type of twine has its good and bad points. The sisal as you have found rots if on the ground bu the poly lasts a very long time and can be a pain to get rid of after you have feed the bale out. Even in a barn the sisal twine can/will rot

I just love the "They're in great shape" followed by the rotted twine comment. If there was enough moisture to rot twine in one month then the bottom of the bales are not in good shape.

Poly works good, it is all we use. But it can be frustrating for some people who are used to twine rotting away when it stays for years and years. There is a product called Clearfield twine, it is a decomposable polymer that will hold a bale together for a couple of years outside, but will eventually break down. It will still clog up manure spreader beaters and wrap around wheel spindles, but at least it eventually goes away.

in the hay mow this is on wood floor. i turn first layer on edge it seems to help also harder for mice to get at

When we started round baling many, many years ago we tried the 110, and 140#. The 140 is the only one we use, the 110 just doesn't seem to hold up as good.

I hold the bale slightly off the ground and use one of those cheap razor blade knives that you break off the dull sections so that you have a fresh blade. Just walk down the side of the bale and the strings pop as you cut them. Easily gathered and rolled up in your hands, throw it in the cab and go after the next one.
