Why are the spikes on all four corners hook-shaped and all the other spikes are all straight? The photos are not of my harrow, but mine is set up the same way.

dad always told me that when the teeth are in the horizontal position the harrow rides on the hooks; they lift the frame off the ground.

i have a 6' and two 4' that i can pull together on a single bar. we us to drag them over the corn when it was a bout 4 leaves tall. dad call it the first plowing.

Obviously, the harrow in your picture is upside-down. The purpose

of the curved shanks is to allow the harrow to be transported/skidded
from one location to another. Apparently used primarily in the long-ago
country before the roads were graveled or hard-surfaced.

Yes, I believe that is the correct answer. When you push the lever all the way forward (as in the photo), hook-shaped spikes are the only thing that touches the ground and they act like skids.
