Henderson loader

I finally got around to fixing the Henderson loader on my Farmall M. Oil was pouring out the vent hole on the top of one cylinder and the pump was only lifting the bucket a little bit at a time. Fixing the cylinder seal was not hard-- $13. I put a used pump on there from a retired farmer who said it worked when removed. Now it lifts about a foot at a time-- if you keep sort of pumping the lever it will lift it all the way up but this doesn't seem to be how it should work. I added more 30 weight oil and it worked a little better but I am concerned about overfilling-- those cylinders have a lot of space in them-- maybe I just need more oil or is this a symptom of overfilling or just another somewhat shot pump?

Sounds like it may be sucking air. What kind of reseryoir are you useing? do you have a reservoir? If you think the pump is shot, hook a pressure gauge to it and see what pressure it puts out.

Do you have double acting cylinders on loader to give the oil capacity? If not then I would say you are out of oil as they need an extra resivor(tank) to have enough oil capacity.

They are one way cylinders. There is no reservoir. I could add a reservoir I guess but at one time it worked better than it currently does with no reservoir... Where would I put a reservoir?

Gotta M with belly pump and one way trip loader. The belly pump is the resivour. Raise loader till it stops, add a little more oil. If it works keep adding.

You just might not be filling it full enough. The resivor can be filled to the top of the filler neck but you need room for expansion of the oil. The way to add a resivor is to take pipe and go up from the oil fill cap to any place you can mount a tank, might only need something that will hold a quart just for expansion or bigger for larger one way cylinders like a wagon hoist. Just try filling to an inch below top of filler neck and see is it works, if it does then just add a piece of pipe to filler neck for the expansion tank and put orignal filler cap on top.
