Round baler

I run my NH850 in 3rd gear on my Oliver S88 about 3/4 throttle. Learned the hard way that if I run 1st gear I make a bale that instead of lifting the bale with my Ford 841 with loader I lift the rear tire or tires off the ground which is not a good thing to happen

I have a 485 CIH and 4590 M&W baler.I run in 3rd lo usually,about 3 1/2 mph,basically because lower speed makes a tighter bale,and I could use more HP.Mark

Twenty years ago B range 3rd and 4th. Ten years ago B range 1st and 2nd. This year A range 3rd and 4th. Same 4030 and M&W 1500, Operator getting older.

Pretty slow. 5th low or 4th mostly. A $1600 round baler that I got a decade ago with a few teeth missing doesn't feed fast...... Works for my 40-60 bales a year. Had to custom bale 9 bales for a friend last week, kept asking him if he wanted to depend on me really? ;)

I just finished a field of Coastal Bermuda. Small field, plenty of time, decided to go slow. Got some of the best looking, dense, twine wrapped, Bermuda I have ever done. Will continue the process in the future. On stalky stuff (sorghum-sudan hybrid) I go at a pretty good clip. Funny thing about a JD open mouth baler, I've had 2 and never had a problem over stuffing it, gathering wheels or not.

I rather run slower and bale as big of a windrow as I can get under the tractor, less trips and I like the bale that comes out that way better.I'm using older equipment too plus with most places I bale running fast will beat you to death on the tractor anyway.
