Odd moldboard

So I bought this plow today, and have never seen anything like it. What's the function of the cutouts, or whatever you want to call them?

The slatted moldboards were designed to be used in sticky ground, such as black gumbo or clay, as well as others. Supposed to have less metal for the sticky soils to attach to. They plow fine even in soil that is not sticky as long as the plow is set up correctly. Not exactly rare, but not exactly common either. Bob

Slat bottom, exactly as Bob says.

Heavy wet sticky soils don't scour well at all, this helped.

Is that a Dearborn Motors Co. plow? I have a solid, 2 bottom plow, with traditional shares, that has a very similar frame. Don't know about the open shares , though.
Nice little outfit. Mine plows and shines up, really well after 40-50 years. Those coulter discs have some mileage. Had to replace one of mine, not cheap.

Good Luck.
