power needed for a 68 flail mower?

I have a 1956 Ford 640 with 4 speed transmission. Generally this seems to be regarded as in the 28 to 30 HP range. Less at the PTO? I am looking at a new Victory or Betsco 68" flail mower. They have lighter and heavier duty models with their specs calling for more HP for the heavier duty models. I am inclined to believe my fairly strong running Ford would handle the heavier duty mower just fine in Low gear, passable in second and probably not at all in third? These 2 mowers are cheaper and lighter duty Chinese manufacture. Based on reviews, I think they would be fine for my somewhat limited use. I have looked at some used mowers, but they have been mostly in deplorable condition and seemed overpriced based on condition.

You are about right on your thinking. Id think the 641 would be at its limit in heavy cutting in 2nd, if its anything like my 2000 prior was. My 2000 wouldn't have my 6' brush hog in anything more than 2nd with WOT. Does the manufacturer list a HP requirement? I've never run a flail mower, but I imagine they're similar to a finish mower as far as HP goes. If you haven't run the 641 with the non live pto much it will take some getting used to. Not hard to learn though. I've probably not helped you much, but maybe I have. Someone will be along shortly to add to this that knows more than me, I'm sure.
