How to set up for plowing?

As a complete new person to setting up a plow, what should the left rear wheel be set for plowing with a #8 14" plow? Also I will use it on a 300 with 2 point hitch and the 2 point draw bar. Where should I place the clevis and how high off the ground would you set the draw bar?
Dad had a small stick we used to measure between the axle housing and the wheel. I never did ask or find out what setting that was. And he just knew where to put the clevis on our H's solid draw bar that we used to plow with. They of course had the solid draw bar with the swinging one.

You mean right rear wheel? It doesn't really matter. The manuals will tell you that the inside edge of the right wheel should be 17.5" from the center of the tractor, but that would make a narrow tractor. See the picture in the link. The important thing is to make the line of draft pass through the dynamic center of gravity of the tractor. The wheels on your 300 will probably be wide if the centers are set for cultivating and that's fine. The natural thing to do is to position the clevis way to the right on the drawbar to make the plow cut the correct width but you will find that the front of the tractor pulls to the right. You simply have to move the plow drawbar and clevis to the left until the tractor steers neutral.

If the plow pulls crooked and pulls to the left you won't fix it by adjusting the horizontal hitch positions. You've got problems with tail wheel adjustment, hitch height, worn shares or worn landsides.

I like to have my clevis (that's bolted solid to the drawbar) at 13"-15" from the ground and then set the plow drawbar as low as possible on the hitch plates. The design of the hitch plates on the early #8's didn't set the drawbar as low as the later ones so you might have your clevis more like 15"-17" high.
