king cutter finish mower

I borrowed a king cutter finish mower 5ft from my neighbor today.

helped them clean up part of their yard with it.

their grass was very high, had been cut with a rotary cutter, but not low to the ground. It appeared the grass just whipped around under the little king cutter and had no where to exit.

so I brought the finish mower home and took the side panel off, so the cut grass could exit from under the mower like a regular lawn mower. This appeared to take some stress off the finish mower.

Question: was I correct to take the side panel off so the grass could shoot out like a regular yard mower.

the finish mower looks somewhat like the one in the picture, but older model with removable side panels.

The one in the picture is a rear discharge model. Some of the earlier side discharge models had a cover for "mulching". They did not work very well with the flat style King Cutter deck. Letting the grass clipping out form under the deck is the correct way. Just be careful of thrown objects as I bet there is no discharge chute.

Correct: no discharge Shute, however the rear of the mower is tapered as the one in the picture,

I suspect the manufacturer never ment for the little cutter to be cutting material that heavy,
Name: finish mower

As I used the tool out in my side yard that is well kept, it mowed fine like a heavy duty lawn mower, must be designed to chop up the grass clippings as I never saw a trail of clippings,

I will leave the side panel off for the time being,

I have an old 5 ft King Kutter finish mower that I bought probably 20 years ago. Have one side off for discharge. Works very well. If I am in stuff that is 1 ft tall, I raise it up and cut and then come back and make narrow cuts to get it low. The secret of these old mowers is grease them every time you use them.
I hope to get 5 more years out of mine.

I installed a drive belt on the cutter for them many years ago,
Assumed the cutter had not been used much, but found the blades very dull, so I guess it has,

I greased it well, but noticed a howling coming from the deck, so I guess a bearing is going bad

No more than it will get used, maybe with plenty of grease and sharp blades it will last a while longer,

Nice little machine,

My Woods belly mount finish mowers are nominally rear discharge, but have end plates which are removable, and one of them can be replaced with a deflector chute. I used them with the plates removed for the very reason you mention- tall grass. if one could always mow when they should, leaving the end plates on wouldn't be an issue.
I now use a 7', 3 point hitch Woods rear discharge finish mower. The ends are not removable. I have enough power on that it's not an issue.

Richard,
There is no such thing as a free lunch,
I mowed my side lot with the little 5ft King Kutter today, it did a very good job,

so I greased it again, took the belt cover off, put a 4ft stick on each spindle while it was running to determine which spindle was making more noise, as it still seems a bit noisy to me.

that is when I noticed the belt, what a mess, its on the last leg, wonder I made it through the mowing job.

No such thing as a free lunch, they said I could borrow it or keep it and use it for a while,
but I am going to have to buy a belt if I keep using it.

I saw this one: 5/8" x 136" B133K/5L1360K
about $40+
guess I need to just take it back before it breaks.
o well it was a nice run and it does a good job, I can see why people like them.

WellMax..... I use heavy duty belt spray dressing on all my belts for snow blower, riding mower or whatever uses a belt. Its not for serpentine belts. It prevents the belts from drying out and slipping and prolongs the life of the belts. So far I got 4 years on the riding mower on both the blade and drive belts. Been using it for years and works great. Used to use it on my autos before they went serpentine belts and never broke one. Just had to change them when they were to far stretched out to adjust.
