Haybine Mowing Position Question

Anyone running their haybine in the locked-up position for the purpose of clipping their fields before winter?

I can lock my Hesston 1110 in the up position via a pin, yet still have it in the open/field vs transport position. Outwardly I don't see any driveline extreme angles that might cause a problem?

It is so dry here that I don't want to clip my fields close with a sickle bar mower or with the haybine in the down position (5 inches is the setting height). I'd like to leave as much height and green leaves as possible for fall recovery/regrowth. The goal here is to trim cut above the dormant Timothy and nix native weeds before they go to seed.

I'd use a 5ft bush hog, but thinking the 7ft haybine would be a much faster and cleaner cut.

Anyone use their haybine in the up position to clip their fields?

Thanks!
Bill

Can you bolt a chain or something in to set it half way down instead of all the way? Or switch to a cylinder with a stop on it?

Not sure, I'd need to look at it again. Do you have concerns about the cutting height for clipping or driveline issues?

BTW - how is the Kuhn disc mower conditioner working out? I've been boning up on all of these brands and Kuhn is the only mfg that offers one in a 9ft-ish model with steel on steel rollers and a 2 point lift arm hitch.

Thanks,
Bill

There's an awful angle to the PTO shaft on that Hesston when it's all the way up. I know it runs alright that way when you raise it on a headland, but I don't know what it would do if you ran it that way for a long time. Seems like it would leave so much stubble that it might not be worth the effort too.

I've got no complaints with that Kuhn, especially since I got that 2-105 White with a good selection of ground speeds. It still blows my mind how much hay I can cut in a day with it.

Any tractor place will have collars to go on the cylinder to enable you to lower it to any height you need and stop.Usually they come in a bag of 6 or 8 with different thicknesses they just clamp around the cylinder shaft.

I use a 488 NH haybine to clip. It's 9ft wide, faster than my 7ft bush hog and it doesn't leave tire tracks where the weeds get pushed down

All the way up is too high, I use the collars around the cylinder shaft to get the height I want.

Was out clipping for about 7 hours yesterday, got a real ironweed problem, hoping if I clip now to stop the seeds, let things grow back a few weeks, the hit it with some 2,4D, I can clear them out for next year.
