Bush Hog 105R-No shear pin?

Is it normal for a bush hog 105R (think thats what it is) to not have a shear pin? All of the connections have splines with a bolt through them. All of the bolts were slightly bent and had to be hammered out just to get the pto shaft off.

Thats not the bush hog hooked up, so ignore that, but why is that extra adapter on there? Tractor came with that on there.

tractor end of the pto. It appears to of had a quick disconnect but its gone. Cant that be replaced?

Bush hog end.

Yes, you can get "Kits" to rebuild the Button latch..

Looks like the adapter is there to let you use the 3-Point to attach the Bush-Hog ( etc)..

If you were using a short Drawbar ( as probably originally it had) you would not need it..

Some Older tractors had non-standard PTO shaft diameters, but not on your tractor ( I do not think)..

The Universal Joint needs to be at the point that the HITCH bends, to keep it quiet and Happy..!

I would not use that machine on my tractor until you add a shear bolt or slip clutch protection,

If you hit a steel pipe or some such and twist or bend your tractor pto shaft, a slip clutch will be a minor cost compared to replacing a broken
tractor pto shaft or worse,

Just my humble opinion!

How does one know what kind of rebuild kit to get for the button latch?

What do you mean by the Ujoint needs to be where the hitch bends?

What tractor do you have??? The front adaptor could be from 1 1/8 spline to 1 3/8 modern spline. The older Fergusons and Fords had the smaller shaft when they came out.

As for there not being any shear bolts. Many of the OLD Bush hogs did not have any type of protection for hitting things.

Its a 75 ford 3000. Couldn't get the adapter off even when the bolt was out. Think the spines are a bit buggered up.

Ill have to look into getting a clutch then. They are too $$ at tractor supply. Ill have to figure out what size everything is and order one online. Amazing it all lasted this long. Ive bush hogged a good bit with it and just figured one of the bolts I could see was a shear bolt. Good thing I didnt hit anything.

Anyone have any experience with replacing the button pin?

I have yet to see the old style button for sale anywhere that would be the replacement for that old of a pto shaft. The original one had an end that stuck out the small hole and a type of clip held it in place so it wouldn't come apart. Lose the clip, you lose the button and spring as well.

Maybe one of the newer style buttons would work, you just have to find a way to keep it in there. I'm a machinist so I just had a co worker in his free time whip out half a dozen for me on a CNC lathe for the misc. implements that needed a new one around the farm. Just so happened that he used a small chunk of stainless, so I have a nice shiny release button on several old rusty implements.

The more modern buttons are all on the wall at TSC.

Jeepjeepster" Your Ford 3000 should not need any adaptor on the front as it should be a 1 3/8 six spline shaft.

As for your slip clutch and PTO shaft. Since your cutter gear box has an 1 3/8 six spline shaft you can buy an entire PTO shaft with the slip clutch on it for about what just the slip clutch costs. I see some on Ebay for around $125. They are for a tiller so you would need to check and make sure they are long enough. Ag supply has one too for around $190 that is long enough and pretty heavy. So shop around and solve both your issues at one go.

When measuring a PTO shaft, where to you measure to and from? Is it tip to tip or??

Thanks Don-Wi. I may just drill out the hole and put the typical pin through it with the bowed latch. Sounds like its going to be more trouble than its worth. More so if I can buy the whole PTO shaft with the clutch for about the same price as just the clutch.

That is a 1 3/8" pto shaft extension on the end of the tractors pto shaft. Can you get that extension off to see what the splines look like on the tractors pto shaft. Post a picture of it.

It wouldnt easily slide off. I was needing to use a post hole digger and didnt want to get in a mess so I slid it back home and put a new bolt through it. when I dont need the tractor the next day ILl try to get it off and check the splines.
