1000 rpm Round Baler Opinions

We have a John Deere 4630 tractor with 1000 pto only and are looking for a hay roller to buy. We have a Massey Ferguson 822 4x4 roller now that has 540 pto but we have to lug the tractor and on the hills it is hard to keep it steady. We are looking to upgrade and spend less than $10k. We are looking at NH 660 and JD 530 and 535 rollers. What would everyone recommend?? Thanks in advance.

You might check out the specifics, but lots of
balers, you can change to 1000 by turning the
gearbox around. I know my hesston does that, I think
some Vermeer also.

I have a vermeer that is 1000. I got it cheaper, nobody wanted it for that reason. Got a rhino mower for the same reason. I don't care which it is, my tractors have both. My vermeer is a 604L. By the way most, if not all Vermeer balers work both ways. You flip the gear box over and put the other spline shaft on it.

Any vermeer that has the aluminum gear box case can be reversed to change from 540 to 1000 also is really
tuff gear box timken bearings gears separate from shaft. We sold more for other uses than for balers. Not
sure of whether or not your baler is a painted vermeer or hesston all vermeer since 1978 used same flipable
box

My New Idea also could switch from 540 to 1000 rpm by flipping the gearbox, then switch the pto yoke to 21 spline 1000 rpm.

As previously stated JD rd balers can be converted from 540 to 1000 rpm by flipping gearbox & swapping shaft(key 22).

what's a hay roller? can't say I ever heard of one.. As a kid my farmer neighbor had an Allis Chalmers roto-baler.. and even then they were called round balers..
but then I also have run into folks who call a small square baler a hay press... but in this instance there is precedent.. Early stationary machines that produced
small square bales - 50 100 lbs were called hay presses. So what is a hay roller... by acceptable definition.. or are we just making stuff up... try and go to your
nearest farm machinery dealer and try to buy a hay roller .... I bet they would look at you as if you were a hydra... pardon the rant.. I just spent an afternoon
baling with my BIG ROUND John Deere baler. and listening to the absurd political commentary, from people who are poorly educated, don't know history and have
no curiosity... but I digress ... I run a flail chopper with a low end high torque 85 540/1000 PTO HP tractor.. switched to the 1000 rpm pto option installed a 540
PTO adaptor on the shaft and run my flail at 1100-1200 engine RPM... saves a lot of diesel... but then I have a neighbor who likes to see the black stuff coming
out of tractor's exhaust ... to each his own I suppose...but gauging by his cattle he would be better served putting his money into feed instead of fuel...

Closest thing to a hay roller that I can think of was made by Hawk Bilt. It had a rattle chain similar to NH chain rd baler but it had spring teeth bolted to chain pipes. One rolled hay on the ground in a bale(bundle). Turning a sharp curve or corner was a challenge as one needed to slow chain down or get hay puked on open station tractor operator.

Thanks everyone, the MF 822 is a Vicon baler I believe. We also have a John Deere 510 now that we swapped the gearbox around so we could have 1000 pto. The 510 is hard to get a bale started without the belts on the edge lapping over and having to stop and pull the hay out. I'm glad to hear the later JD balers are like that also. We have been looking at some JD, NH, and Vermeer balers but here in TN there aren't many Vermeer- seems like mostly JD and NH where we are. Oh and a lot of people around here call them hay rollers- maybe we're all just too dumb to know any better.. lol.

Any JD rd baler built after the 410/510 is a much better baler. All models after 410/510 are open throat for easier baler starting and also have hyd tension for tighter bales.
